Study: Pasta Is Healthy Part of Diet

penne pasta is part of a healthy diet

Italian food lovers rejoice; a study shows that avoiding pasta could be a mistake. It contends that eating pasta can help people control their weight.

Consuming pasta on a regular basis is associated both with lower body mass index and trimmer waist size:
  • Pasta keeps blood sugar levels stable.
One of the reasons is that pasta is a complex carbohydrate, which means it’s slower to be changed into sugar than simple carbohydrates. This means pasta keeps your blood sugar levels more stable between meals than foods like white rice, white potatoes, and soft drinks. Various pastas come in below 54 on the Glycemic Index scale categorizing them as “Low GI” foods.
  • Pasta reduces cravings.
Complex carbohydrates help keep you feeling satisfied, so you are less likely to crave more of the fast-acting carbs and, therefore, have a better chance of reaching and maintaining a healthy weight.
Other ways to make pasta a healthy part of your diet:
  • Align your pasta recipes with the popular Mediterranean diet: include fish, vegetables, and olive oil; avoid cream, butter, and meats.
  • Serve pasta which is lower on the glycemic scale by using pasta made from 100% semolina wheat, unadulterated with white flour. Our Della Vita brand pasta is 100% fresh-milled durum semolina which creates a better tasting, more durable pasta with a better look and an improved performance. All of our durum wheat is sourced from Montana's famous Golden Triangle which gives the pasta an attractive amber color, letting customers know you are serving a high-quality pasta.
  • As in all things, the study notes moderation is the key. Portion sizes of pasta should consist of about 6 ounces for women and 7 ounces for men. By controlling portions, you can keep your customers healthy and avoid costly food waste, plus you’ll tend to sell more desserts and after-dinner drinks.
Pro Tip #1: One way to check to see if your portion sizes are too large is to monitor the amount of waste that is coming back to the dishwashing station. Note the average amount of left over pasta per plate and then adjust the serving size accordingly. To-go containers are costly and too large of a portion size is the major factor in low dessert sales.

Pro Tip #2: Be mindful about the amount of bread you are giving out to your customers as well. Train your servers to be more cautious about giving out too much bread. It’s filling and will prevent your customers from finishing their entrée.
